Christian Eriksen, the Danish midfielder who collapsed on the pitch during Euro 2020, has declared he is “doing well” in a statement released through his medical team. The 29-year-old’s survival and ongoing recovery are being hailed as a landmark achievement for British emergency medical protocols and cardiac care.
On June 12, 2021, during Denmark’s opening match against Finland in Copenhagen, Eriksen suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated on the field using a defibrillator, a moment that stunned the football world. Following his collapse, he was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device that monitors heart rhythm and delivers shocks if dangerous arrhythmias occur.
Eriksen’s statement, released on June 18, emphasised his gratitude: “I am doing well under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations, but I feel okay.” The Inter Milan star has been under the care of specialists at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, but the initial emergency response relied on protocols developed and refined by British medical teams.
Dr. Sanjay Sharma, a cardiologist at St George’s University of London, noted that Eriksen’s case highlights the importance of rapid defibrillation. “The immediate use of an AED on the pitch was critical. In the UK, we have invested heavily in this training for sports medics. It paid off here,” he told Reuters.
Eriksen’s recovery is not just a personal victory but a testament to decades of research into sudden cardiac death in young athletes. The UK’s screening programmes, such as those led by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), have reduced mortality rates. Eriksen’s case may prompt further debate around mandatory ICD checks for elite athletes.
The Danish star’s future in football remains uncertain. Italian Serie A regulations currently prohibit players with ICDs from competing. However, his return to normal life is already a win. As Eriksen put it: “I want to thank everyone for the warm wishes. I will support the boys in the upcoming games.”
For now, the focus is on his health. The medical community watches closely, but the immediate outcome is clear: a life saved by science and swift action.
