The European Union's quest for a mediator to 'whisper' Russia out of Ukraine is a dangerous misread of the threat landscape. This is not diplomacy, it is capitulation dressed in sequins. The Kremlin does not respond to whispers.
It responds to hard power, to sanctions that bite, and to military readiness on the Eastern flank. Every attempt at dialogue without a coercive framework simply allows Moscow to reset, rearm, and retool its hybrid warfare playbook. The EU's move exposes a fundamental intelligence failure: Russia's strategic goal is not a negotiated settlement but the fracturing of NATO and the subjugation of Ukraine.
Any mediator without a clear mandate to enforce Ukraine's territorial integrity is a useful idiot for the Kremlin. Watch for increased cyber attacks on Baltic states and energy infrastructure in Poland as Russia tests the EU's resolve. The only credible deterrent is a massive ramp-up in armour and artillery for Kyiv, coupled with a no-fly zone enforcement capability.
Anything less is a strategic pivot to defeat.
