Protests by Iranian-Americans against the Islamic Republic’s football team have escalated into a diplomatic row, with the United Kingdom formally censuring Tehran’s human rights record. Demonstrators gathered outside the team’s hotel in London ahead of the World Cup qualifier, accusing the regime of using sport to whitewash its abuses. The Foreign Office issued a statement denouncing Iran’s “systematic repression”, including the suppression of women’s rights and the execution of political prisoners.
The protests, which drew hundreds waving the pre-revolutionary lion-and-sun flag, reflect a broader diaspora campaign to politicise international sporting events. Analysts suggest the UK’s intervention may strain already tense bilateral relations, particularly amid stalled nuclear talks.
