The Islamic Republic of Iran Football Federation has escalated a diplomatic row by revoking tickets for its nationals attending the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The decision, announced Tuesday, affects thousands of fans who had already purchased seats for the tournament, which begins next month. The federation cited unresolved travel restrictions imposed by Qatar as the reason for the cancellations.
Iranian officials have accused Doha of limiting direct flights and imposing visa barriers for Iranian supporters. The move marks a significant deterioration in relations between the two countries ahead of a major global sporting event. Iran's national team is scheduled to play England, Wales, and the United States in Group B.
The sport's governing body, FIFA, has urged both nations to resolve the issue, stating that 'all fans should be able to enjoy the World Cup freely'.
