The Middle East is once again a powder keg. Israel launched airstrikes into southern Lebanon at dawn. The targets were Hezbollah positions, they say. But this is not a routine tit-for-tat. This is a message. And the recipient is in Tehran.
I’m told the strikes were precise. Limited. No civilian casualties claimed yet. But the political shockwaves are what matter. Because from Iran, a curious sound. Not defiance. Diplomacy.
President Pezeshkian, speaking this afternoon, floated the phrase: “A nuclear deal is within reach.” The words hang in the air like a diplomatic Hail Mary. This from a regime that has been enriching uranium at near-weapons-grade. This from a regime that just days ago threatened “obliteration” for Israel.
So what changed? The whispers from Whitehall and Foggy Bottom say this: Israel’s patience snapped. They have been watching the Iran-Hezbollah nexus harden. The airstrikes were a demonstration. A warning that the ‘Bomb’ is not the only threat.
But here’s the inside game. The US is nervous. A direct Israel-Iran war would be catastrophic. So they press Tehran. Hard. And Pezeshkian’s offer is a lifeline. A way to de-escalate without losing face.
Back in Westminster, the Foreign Office is playing it cool. “We urge restraint and de-escalation.” Translation: we are watching our allies like hawks. The PM is getting daily briefings. The backbenches are stirring. There are questions about UK bases in Cyprus being used for refuelling. Denied, of course.
But the real question is this: Can you do a deal with a regime that funds Hezbollah? The hardliners in Tehran will scream betrayal. The moderates will say it is survival. Israel will demand ironclad guarantees.
For now, the bombs have fallen. The diplomats are scrambling. And in the dark corners of Whitehall, they are already gaming the next move. This story has legs. And they are running fast.
