A man has been killed in a shark attack off the coast of northern New South Wales, Australian authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Salt Beach, south of Kingscliff, a popular surfing area. Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a serious injury, but the victim, believed to be in his 50s, died at the scene.
The species of shark involved has not yet been identified. Local officials have closed the beach and are urging swimmers to exercise caution. New South Wales police and the Department of Primary Industries are investigating.
Fatal shark attacks are rare in Australia, with an average of one per year. The last recorded fatality in the region was in 2020.
