Alexx Ekubo, the Nigerian actor celebrated for his roles in Nollywood productions and a growing international profile, has died of cancer at the age of 40. His death was confirmed on Saturday by his family in a statement released through his publicist. Ekubo had been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, a battle he had kept largely private.
Born on April 10, 1984, in Umuahia, Nigeria, Ekubo rose to prominence in the early 2010s with performances in romantic comedies and dramas. He became a household name in Nigeria's prolific film industry, starring in more than 50 films, including "The First Lady," "Weekend Getaway," and "The Wait." His work earned him nominations for the Africa Movie Academy Awards and the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards.
In recent years, Ekubo had sought to expand his reach beyond Nollywood, appearing in British independent films and attending industry events in London. British cinema figures expressed their condolences, with the British Film Institute noting his "contribution to bridging the cultural gap between Nigerian cinema and British audiences."
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world. Nigerian director Kunle Afolayan described Ekubo as "a talent taken too soon," while British-Nigerian actor David Oyelowo called him "a trailblazer for African storytelling." The British High Commission in Nigeria also issued a statement, highlighting Ekubo's role in enhancing cultural ties.
Ekubo's death marks the latest loss in a year that has seen several prominent African entertainers succumb to illness. Nollywood, the second-largest film industry by output, has lost leading figures to cancer and other diseases, prompting calls for better healthcare access for artists.
He is survived by his parents and two siblings. Details of a memorial service are expected to be announced in the coming days.
