The Crown Princess of Norway, Mette-Marit, has undergone a successful lung transplant, the Royal Household in Oslo confirmed on Tuesday. The 48-year-old royal, who has battled chronic progressive pulmonary fibrosis since 2018, received the transplant at the Oslo University Hospital. The procedure, which lasted several hours, was described by medical staff as uncomplicated.
King Charles III, a personal friend of the Norwegian royal family, sent a private message of support. Crown Princess Mette-Marit is expected to remain hospitalised for several weeks as part of a standard recovery protocol. The prognosis is cautiously optimistic, with doctors noting that transplant outcomes for patients with this condition have improved significantly in recent years.
The Crown Princess will step back from official duties for the remainder of the year to focus on rehabilitation. Her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, will represent the royal family at upcoming engagements.
