Oliver Tree, the US musician known for his eccentric persona and viral hits, died in a helicopter collision in Brazil Sunday night, sources confirm. The crash occurred just hours after he performed in São Paulo.
Two helicopters collided near the city of Campinas, about 60 miles north of São Paulo. Tree was a passenger in one of them. All five people aboard both aircraft died.
Tree, 32, had played a show earlier that evening at the Espaço das Américas in São Paulo. He posted a photo backstage minutes before the crash, captioned “I love you Brazil.” The post has since become a memorial page, flooded with tributes.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, but early reports point to a miscommunication with air traffic control. The other helicopter was a private vehicle carrying three local business owners.
This isn’t an isolated tragedy. Brazil has one of the highest rates of helicopter crashes in the world. In 2022 alone, 14 such accidents were reported. The country’s lax safety regulations and poor enforcement have long been a point of contention.
Tree’s death comes as he was riding a career resurgence. His 2023 album “Ugly Is Beautiful” went double platinum. He was scheduled to headline Rock in Rio next week.
His family released a statement: “We are devastated. Oliver was a force of nature, a free spirit who lived for his fans. Please respect our privacy as we grieve.”
The helicopter was a Bell 429, registered to a shell company linked to a São Paulo real estate developer. That company has been tied to a federal corruption probe into overbilled public contracts. Whether this connection is relevant to the crash remains unclear.
What is clear is that a young artist with everything to live for is dead. The money trail will lead somewhere. It always does. And when it does, we’ll be there.
We are Marcus Stone. We follow the money. And we will not look away.
